Caring for Your Dental Implant
Have you decided on a dental implant to replace your missing tooth?
Are you still gathering information before making your decision?
We know that dental implants are an investment, and it’s important to have the information you need before you decide.
One question we frequently is: “How do I take care of my dental implants?” Kirkland dentist Dr. Jen Kim has great news for you! One of the best features of dental implants is how similar they are to your own teeth – and how easy they are to care for!
Brushing and Flossing
Just like with your natural teeth, you will want to brush your implant twice daily and floss once daily. Although an implant crown won’t decay like natural tooth structure, it can still build up plaque and tartar without regular home hygiene. This build-up can then cause harm to neighboring teeth or irritate the gums, leading to gum disease.
Flossing your implant is important to prevent plaque and tartar from building up between the neighboring teeth and the implant. This helps prevent both decay and gum disease. It can also help prevent foreign objects, like bits of food, from getting stuck between the gum tissue and the implant, a situation that could lead to infection.
Regular Visits with Dr. Kim
After your implant is placed and restored, it’s important to keep up with your twice-yearly visits to our office. Not only is it always a pleasure to see your smile, Dr. Kim will check to make sure that your dental implant is healthy (along with the rest of your mouth!). With proper care, dental implants can last for decades – and even a lifetime!
Special Tools and Instructions
Dr. Kim or your hygienist may recommend that you use special tools to clean around your implant, especially if you are prone to gum disease or infection. In this case, make sure to follow these directions to keep your implant and the surrounding tissue healthy.
