If you’ve spent time nagging your kids (or your spouse!) to do a better job with their oral hygiene, you might feel like building good oral health habits in your family is an impossible task.
We have great news for you, however – it’s not!
As a family dentist in Kirkland, WA, Dr. Jen Kim has seen plenty of families turn their less-than-stellar home dental care into much healthier habits. And we know you can do it too!
Try these ideas to make home care simpler and more likely to happen:
1. Set a Good Example
This is not a situation for “do as I say not as I do!” If you aren’t practicing good habits yourself, you’ll have a hard time getting your family to follow along. If you need help remembering to brush and floss, set a timer on your phone to remind you. Apps can also help you brush for the appropriate amount of time.
If you need a refresher course in good brushing technique, just let us know! We’re happy to give you a hands-on lesson in excellent brushing and flossing.
Once you’ve got it down, invite your kids in to watch you while you brush. Kids love to mimic their parents, and you might find brushing becoming more routine without having to do anything else!
2. Practice Baby Steps
It’s unrealistic to expect your family to go from zero to a perfect brushing and flossing routine. That’s okay. We’ll get there eventually!
In the meantime, start small and build on existing habits. Do you have a routine for getting ready in the morning or going to bed at night? Where can brushing and flossing fit into these routines? If you “piggyback” dental care onto another necessity (like taking a shower or even using the restroom!), it will be easier to make it a habit and then continue building on it.
3. Make It Fun
Yes, brushing and flossing can be fun!
Remember those apps we mentioned earlier? Have a look through your phone’s app store and see what’s available. You’ll be amazed! There are puzzles, pieces to collect, songs to listen to, and videos to watch to help you get the most out of your brushing and flossing routine. Your kids will especially get a kick out of this, and you can mix it up periodically to keep the novelty.
