Are tooth-colored fillings safer than metal fillings?
Studies Have Address These Concerns
Tooth-colored fillings are made of composite resin. Metal amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings, are made of a blend of different metals, one of which is mercury. Many patients are concerned about the mercury contained in amalgam fillings, but numerous studies have been performed that demonstrate that the mercury found in metal fillings poses no danger whatsoever. No cases of mercury toxicity have ever been connected to amalgam dental fillings.
Composite resin fillings have several advantages over amalgam fillings:
- Composite resin fillings blend in well with your natural tooth color, making the fillings practically invisible.
- Composite resin fillings bond with your teeth from the inside, which can strengthen your teeth and provide additional support.
- Composite resin fillings do not expand and contract with changes in temperature like amalgam fillings can.
